Techniques to Reduce Stress

We all suffer from some form of stress it is how we deal with it that counts. As with many things in life it’s all a matter of perception, a situation that stresses one person to breaking point may offer healthy motivation to another. Stress is a natural inbuilt self-defence mechanism that we are all born with, it’s all to do with the fight or flight response hormones like adrenaline and cortisol are released, they help us to either stand and fight or run away.

In life or death situations stress is essential to survival the such as adrenaline, noradrenaline, testosterone and cortisol helps to prepare our muscles for physical activity and all kinds of powerful painkillers are released into our bloodstream, in 2018 daily life or death situations are not that common and stress can be very detrimental to our physical and mental well being.

Side Effects of Stress

For most of us in the modern world our only sources of stress are found in safe environments such as the office, in school and even at home, in such environments there is no physical danger and none of the energy built up by our stress response is released so it can be extremely detrimental to our physical and health.

When people become stressed they may experience unwanted side effects such as; flushing, palpations and shaking. Blood vessels will constrict, the body will release fat and glucose to prepare for physical activity. Stress can cause all kinds of physical illness such as; headaches, diarrhea, constipation or nausea, chest pain, insomnia, aches and pains all over the body and much more. Long-term stress can cause obesity, heart disease, skin conditions, heart attacks and strokes.

Psychological Effects

Sufferers of stress can also experience psychological problems such as; panic attacks, irritability, anger, tooth grinding and depression. These psychological problems caused by stress can result in social withdrawal, poor judgement, eating disorders, alcohol poor decision making and substance misuse, even suicide. Stress can affect every aspect of a sufferers life.

Stress and anxiety are like two sides of the same coin they come with the same side effects and the body releases the same chemicals but stress is suffered in the moment and anxiety is fear or frustration of a future event, the mind cannot differentiate between a perceived threat and a real one so anxiety is caused when a sufferer envisages negative outcomes in the future. I find repeating the affirmation “there is nothing to fear but fear itself” to be an effective way of calming myself down when I experience anxiety.

Dealing With Stress and Anxiety

Change your thinking – Wayne Dyer once said “when we change the way we see things the things we see change”, sitting around worrying about your stress is only going to make it worse. Don’t be a victim to your situation, know you can improve and you will. There is no sense in worrying or complaining it only reinforces bad feelings and makes matters worse.

Exercise – As we said above stress and anxiety cause all sorts of hormonal and chemical reactions in the body, exercise and physical activity can help to release all of this energy and let the stress out.

Hypnosis – Hypnotherapy is a naturally relaxing experience, a short hypnosis recording can offer a quick fix to instantly reduce stress and anxiety. A skilled hypnotherapist can use hypnosis techniques to reprogram the mind, creating new neural pathways and introducing the client to anchoring and grounding techniques, such techniques will enable the client to will dissipate stress quickly and easily.

Meditation – Meditation and mindfulness techniques are very effective at reducing stress, next time you feel yourself getting wound up or ready to explode just take a moment to focus on your breath. A very quick meditation technique is called box breathing, just breath in for the count of five, hold it for the count of five, breath out for the count of five and pause for the count of five before repeating again, repeat this process five times and notice how much more relaxed you feel afterwards.

Supplements – If you want to try supplementation you will find a number of plants and herbal remedies to aid stress relief, Ashwagandha has a strong reputation for stress relief it has been used for thousands of years in Ayurvedic medicine, it has also been shown to increase libido and testosterone both of which can be affected by stress. Macuna Puriens is another supplement that has been proven to reduce stress, like Ashwagandha it can improve libido and hormonal balance in this study it was found to improve the quality of semen for infertile men too.

What NOT To Do If Your Wife Won’t Have Sex with You

Wife Husband

Lovers of the net have probably come across the she-said-no-sex-tonight spreadsheet doing rounds on social media, this is somewhat old but still relevant with today’s couples who struggle with the same thing. I can concur as I have had similar challenges myself. The content of it laughable, yes, but like any serious marriage counsellor would tell you, the couple has some serious talking to do.

Communication is key to any relationship, but it is not easy for everyone to communicate especially if you not on the same page with each other. It may sound easy to do, but in reality, it is not, we all built differently.

The ‘is sex an important aspect of marriage’ question is one that begs serious attention. Apparently, sex is so important in marriage that it accounts for at least half of the divorces filed per annum, true story.

So it does not really help when her answer is always no. It is actually a very humiliating kick to the nether or below the belt region for males. Humans are sexual beings, it is in our DNA, we built to like and enjoy and most important want or need sex.

However not everyone is built in this way and males mostly do want sex, but there are both males and females who don’t really care for it and could live without it they wanted.

Why She Won’t Have Sex With You

You are not alone; the ‘honey not tonight’ answer is one that does not sit pretty with a lot of men. A lot of women are oblivious to the fact that men do not take this kind of rejection too well or perhaps they are aware and use it to their advantage to make men suffer. Unfortunately, this typically does not end well for marriages and for either party.

Typically two things will happen a) the one left stranded if you will, will likely start looking elsewhere and b) a divorce is likely imminent and the relationship will fall deeper into that black hole making it harder to climb out of. The ‘I am really tired tonight’ might sound like ‘ you do not excite me anymore’ to you but it is important for you to understand that it is not always the case.

Here is a possible list of reasons why she won’t have sex with you but not limited to this list, as there could be other variables that just makes her not interested.

  1. She Might not Enjoy it.

Let’s face it, a lot of men think sex is all about them. Take the time to think about what she likes and how she likes it. Then, maybe, the no’s would become lesser. Also if you having sex in the same way, try spice it up. I know as we get older we don’t want to put in any real effort, we become selfish and we just want to satisfy.

Try to do something different, if you have never tried using things like a vibrator, go order a vibrator online if you too shy to enter a store. In today’s world, nobody really cares anymore except some prudes, you shouldn’t be embarrassed walking into a store. If you are, your first time may be awkward and it will be less and less as you visit the store more and is perfectly natural. The people in these stores are generally very helpful and will make your awkwardness as little as possible.

  1. Too Tired

At times she really is just too tired. Running a house with two or more toddlers is never easy. Having multiple jobs or having a long commute will make anyone tired and not interested. Make a date, book a time when it works for both of you. Even though you have been married for years, dating is a good thing to keep the spark alive. Try to make the time and effort and continue with that. Buying flowers or gifts now and then will go a long way.

  1. Insecurities

She hates her saggy boobs and the way her stomach splits into two everytime she is seated. She might not feel as attractive as she used to right before she gave birth to your children. Remind her that she is beautiful and that you will always love her. Even though we get older and understand this happens, we still become ashamed of our bodies. Giving her or him reassurance this does not matter to you will help.

Marriage Sex Spreadsheet

What Not to Do

Frustrating as it may, one always has to remember to keep calm. Here is a well thought out list of what not to do if your wife won’t have sex with you.

  1. Don’t be Tempted to Cheat

Rule number one; cheating is never the solution, it only makes it worse. Rejection attracts that ‘trapped in a sexless marriage’ feel. Sticking to a spouse who does not meet your sexual needs can at times be both emotionally and physically draining. You might be tempted to seek sexual solace in searching for intimacy somewhere else. Prostitutes, online porn, mistresses, and affairs become your kind of perfect. There are a sling of reasons why this is a bad idea; STDs and unwanted pregnancies are some of them. Getting caught, of course, is never a good way to end the story. Talk it out with her, try to communicate.

As this couple or guy did above, he created a list and email her the list of when he rejected her. Instead of emailing her, making a list isn’t a bad idea, but sit down and talk and see if you can make time for each other. In her case,  she blasted the list onto social media which was wrong as well. This is a private matter and should be discussed with each other. This shows how bad the communication has become between both parties.

You need to try to understand what is wrong and how you can fix it. You may be surprised it may be little things, like helping more with the chores or maybe carrying the groceries in when she needs help.  You may even surprise yourself how litlte you have to do to fix the root cause of the problem, but you won’t know until you sit down and talk with each other.

  1. Assume it is All You

Communication is key. It might be that she has been feeling beat lately. It might be that she has been experiencing a little vaginal dryness. The only means to find out is through talking to her. It becomes easy to assume that it is all us. Maybe I am too boring; maybe I am not as exciting anymore. Well, perhaps you are, but they are ways to fix some of these problems. The spreadsheet couple seems to have a problem with their communication.

It is strange that the husband chose to email his significant other his ‘grievances’ rather than have a one on one conversation. The way the wife, on the other hand, chose to address those ‘grievances’ is also peculiar. Rather than sharing the spreadsheet on social media, having a talk session with her husband could have come in handy. The wife should have taken advantage of the situation to air her concerns and perhaps explain to her husband why sex every night might not be possible. Always remember, to talk and listen to your partner.

  1. Give her the Cold Shoulder

Selfish is what comes to mind everytime she says no. She might come out as a woman who does not care about your needs or about your feelings. This is the wrong way to approach the issue. Like pointed out, her disinterest might be as a result of a lot of underlying issues. The cold shoulder is never the solution to these issues; it only brings about resentment.

  1. Make your Issue Public

The fact that the 26-year-old woman chose to share the spreadsheet publicly is unfortunate. She seems not to understand how serious the situation at hand is or can turn out to be. A married couple is a team, and any issues between the both of you should be addressed discretely. Professional help, however, is encouraged to that couple that feels that the situation is out of their hands.

Just sitting down and talking about the issue may help the issue immensely, more than you may think. Be open to listening to each other. It is not easy living with someone for many years. I have been married for 19 years and it is hard not to fall into a rut and not want to do anything, it is so easy to do. It takes work for any relationship, especially one that has been going on for so many years.

  1. Get Angry

As previously stated, men never take rejection too well. Anger is, however, not the best way to handle the situation. Anger can be easily interpreted as ‘ he only wants me for sex’ which might, in the end, cause more harm than good. An article by Psychology Today places anger thirteenth on the list of ‘reasons why men cheat’. A deprived partner, in his anger, might choose to intentionally do things that might hurt his spouse in an attempt to hurt her feelings.

  1. Play the Blame Game

It becomes easy to blame the lack of sex in your marriage on your partner. You are no saint, and neither is she or he. A couple should acknowledge the fact that they both have a role to play when it comes to sex. Explore together and find what does or does not work for them. Take responsibility for your mistakes and always try to up your game.

With time, it becomes easy for couples to forget that sex is an important aspect of their marriage. They treat it as an obligation, a marital duty one must fulfil. Contrary to that, sex is a glue that helps stick you and your loved one together. It keeps you connected and bonded. The fact that your wife won’t have sex with you is saddening. Take it upon yourself to find out why.

Rule number two; Never speculate, always ask.

The Health Benefits of (Dark) Chocolate

Dark Chocolate

When life is all but rosy when all we need is a tight hug and a loyal companion by our side. When we are moody, and a little jovialness could come in handy. When our bedroom affairs need a little spicing up that is when we fully appreciate the magic chocolate is.
But is chocolate healthy? Are there any pluses that come with consuming this tasty comfort food? Well, the answer is yes.

A lot of us see chocolate as our little guilty pleasure, the perfect cheat to our diet. Well, here comes the shocking news, chocolate and all other cocoa-related products are recommended for the dieting. This article has all the details, read on.

Health Benefits of Consuming Dark Chocolate

Scientific research proves that chocolate is indeed very good for our bodies. But there is a hunch; the chocolate has to be the proper type of chocolate, by which we mean dark chocolate. Dark chocolate is the most abundant source of flavanols there is, with it bragging of a 70% cocoa percentage. A side by side comparison of the chocolate with milk chocolate also shows it to have lesser sugar and saturated fat content. White chocolate is more on the sugar-saturated fat side, with it containing zero to almost no cocoa at all.

Although research is still in progress, medics already tie chocolate consumption to battened heart and brain functionality. Additionally, chocolate a day, it is said, keeps life-threatening diseases such as autism, diabetes, and obesity away. All it takes, however, is one to two chocolate cubes, too much could be detrimental to your health.

Here is a well-researched list of some of the health benefits of consuming dark chocolate.

1. Chocolate perks up the heart’s functionality and circulation

First thing first, cocoa is rich in flavanol, a compound known to boost your heart’s functionality. Science has also found the compound useful in the curtailment of cardiovascular diseases, body insulin insensitivity, and brain defects. Flavanol in chocolates play a similar role with the caffeine in coffee, they both ameliorate the functioning of brains.
The flavanol in cocoa also cut down the risk of blood pressure and cholesterol for those with life-threatening levels. In addition to that, flavanols are known to prevent artery inflexibility and the sticking of white blood cells to blood vessels. The above come a long way into preventing the clogging of arteries.

2. Dark Chocolate as the Solution to our Ageing Problems

Dark chocolate works excellently as an anti-ageing agent. The flavanols in the chocolate are known to not only slow down the ageing process but also make the signs of ageing, such as wrinkles, less intense. Additionally, flavanols reduce the rate of occurrence of diseases such as Alzheimer’s which come with age.

Moreover, dark chocolates contain antioxidants almost similar to the ones found in nuts, vegetables, grains, and fruits. The antioxidant levels in them are almost twice those in red wines and green tea and almost equal to those in acai and blueberries. Antioxidants handle the ageing situation perfectly.

3. Suitable for People with type 2 Diabetes

Like previously stated, flavanols help increase body insulin sensitivity and lower the levels of blood sugar; factors known to bring about Type 2 Diabetes. Managing Type 2 Diabetes is all about keeping body insulin and sugar levels in check, a role dark chocolate executes flawlessly.

4. Prevents Asthma Attacks

Dark chocolate might be the answer to asthma. The chocolate has the theophylline, caffeine, and theobromine components which work hand in hand to open blocked bronchial passageways stop bronchospasms. It is these components that make the chocolate a great cough medicine.

5. Fight the Decaying of Teeth

As previously stated, sugar is more on the low when it comes to dark chocolate. Chocolates with higher cocoa concentration are known to have lesser sugar in them. This dramatically reduces the risk of your teeth decaying.

6. Chocolate is Great for Your Skin

Planning on spending a holiday under the sun? Dark chocolate might be the best way to get started. The chocolate helps build up your skin’s resistance to UV lights improving its hydration, blood flow and protecting it from any damages that may result from the strong sun rays. The flavanols in the chocolate enhance the health of your skin by reducing stress-inducing hormones known to break down the advantageous collagen in our skins.

7. The Bedroom Boost

Looking to brighten up the mood up there? Dark chocolate is a sure bet. Cocoa has compounds known to ignite the sexual passions in us. The compounds send feel good’ messages to our brains bringing about an increase in our sexuality. The aphrodisiac is also known to reduce stress, relax individuals and boost energy levels in one’s body.

8. Rich Source of Minerals

Dark chocolates are an incredible source of magnesium, iron, selenium, manganese, copper, potassium, phosphorous and zinc. Additionally, taking chocolate before a meal can help in losing weight. This is because chocolate triggers hormones that trick your brain into thinking you are full. This lowers the amount of food one consumes.

Dark Chocolate

9. Good for expectant mothers

Findings of recent studies show that stress levels of expectant mothers who consumed dark chocolate were much lower than in those that did not. The babies of the chocolate consuming moms were also much happier.

10. The feel-good drug

Chocolate has phenyl-ethylamine, a chemical famously denoted as the feel-good compound. The chemical is the same one released in the brain when one is in love.

How Much Chocolate is Good Chocolate?

Reading this article may prompt you to think that excessive consumption of chocolate is good for your health. There is nothing much further from the truth. Chocolate should be taken in moderation lest it becomes bad for you.

For a long time now, chocolate has been viewed as the sweet villain. A lot have associated it with obesity, high blood pressure, and heart diseases. This article proves that the opposite is true. Dark chocolate, if and when consumed correctly, brings a lot of health benefits to the table.

5 Ways To Keep Your Body Healthy

Heathy Body

With age comes wisdom, financial security, and declining health. But that last one doesn’t have to be that way. If we don’t stay on top of our health it starts naturally declining in our 20s, and I don’t know about you, but I plan to live to live for almost another century after that, but that’s a lot of years for our health to deteriorate.

Harsh words . . . maybe, but if it saves us from heart disease, cancer, obesity, diabetes, and god knows that list goes on, then so be it. Here are 5 ways to get on top of your health.

Boost Metabolism

OK, not to start the article off by scaring you but this first one won’t be easy to hear. After you hit 25 your metabolism starts to decrease — this is natural as you’re not building bone anymore so it can’t be avoided. It’s not that it decreases that’s scary, but by how much.

You can expect your metabolism to decrease at a rate of 1-2% each year after you hit the ripe ol’ age of 25. To put that into perspective, if you can eat 2000 calories max at 25 without putting on any fat, by age 50 you might be only able to consume 1500 at most. Yikes!

This is why diet, and more importantly exercising, are critical if we want to stay at a healthy weight as we age.

Lower Stress

Stress kills! You know that stress is hard on the body, but do you know how? Stress releases the chemicals adrenaline and noradrenaline, and this raises your heart rate and prevents adequate blood flow to both the brain and the musculoskeletal system. As well, glucose levels rise to provide the body with extra energy to combat the threat.

Often we forget about our needs and get caught up taking care of our loved ones, but finding the time where you can be by yourself is so important. And that can look like whatever you want it to be. Be it a TV show, meditation, or listening to music. Just make some time for yourself.

Lower Alcohol Consumption and Tobacco Use

I know it’s difficult and that you’ve heard it a thousand times before, but here it is again.

Smoking and tobacco use are the leading cause of emphysema and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, as well, using tobacco can increase the risk of heart disease and lung, mouth, and throat cancer.

Men should drink no more than 2 drinks a day, while women should stay at just one a day.

Taking Supplements

A multivitamin may be useful if you’re commonly restricting your calories, but if you are at a healthy weight or not on a diet, a multivitamin may be a bit redundant. Instead, check out vitamin D if you’re not getting a lot of sunlight as it can dramatically improve your mood.

As well, look into fish or hemp oil as both are rich in omega 3 and 6 fatty acids which can reduce inflammation and help give you healthier skin.

Give CBD Oil A Try

Pets play a large part in human health, there are studies which show us that being around pets and animals helps us relax, destress and keep a healthy mindset. Pets keep people happy especially pet lovers who can’t live without pets. I for one will always have animals around me. I grew up with pets, I love dogs, cats and even built a large pond in my yard which houses Gold Fish and Koi. Here is a site which I documented the build process.

That being said just as it is important to keep humans healthy, you also need to take care of your furry friends who keep you happy and healthy.

CBD oil is all the rage in 2018 because it’s been helping a lot of people and their animals with the tips from above. Natural CBD oil has been shown in studies to lower weight and balance the hormones that cause hunger and satiety in our pets. As well, many are finding it’s been a big help when it comes to anxiety and stress — some use it for everyday work-induced stress while others for their PTSD.

If that wasn’t enough, this study looked at using CBD inhalers as a replacement whenever a tobacco user wanted a cigarette and found that it significantly lowered their use. Last, like essential oils, CBD oil needs a carrier oil to improve it’s shelf life and bioavailability, and it’s common to see CBD oil with coconut oil or hemp oil. Coconut is so 2017 because oil has a much denser nutrient profile.

10 Reasons Why Sugar is Bad For You

To many people, sugar and sugary substances are things which are so tempting and addictive. Whenever news is broadcasted about sugar most times, they reflect how lousy sugar is to your body. The truth remains sugar has a lot of harmful effects on the body, but also another truth is sugar has a lot of benefits to the body. One of the benefits sugar has to the body is, it adds energy to the body since it has high contents of calorie. For the sake of your skin and health maintenance, you need sugar because of its glycolic acid; it helps in blemish elimination and restoration of skin’s oil balance. Having seen how beneficial sugar can be to our bodies, it is also important to note that sugar has a lot of terrible effects on our bodies. Listed below are ten reasons why too much intake of sugar is inadequate for you.

1. Sugar has high fructose which can cause overload to the liver.

From the digestive tract, before sugar enters the bloodstream, it has to be broken into glucose and fructose. The latter is broken down in the liver, and when broken it turns to glycogen, this glycogen is stored in the liver till the body needs it.When glucose is too much in the liver, it overloads and turns the fructose into fats. Taking too much sugar will lead to fatty liver and always brings a lot of severe problems into your body.

2. Too much intake Sugar promotes tooth decay

Too much or added sugar contains a lot of calories which most of it has no essential nutrients. Sugar adds energy to the body, but it does not have proteins, vitamins or minerals and essential fats. Sugar is terrible for the teeth; it provides digestible energy for the harmful bacteria in the mouth. The harmful bacteria cause tooth decay hence causing problems to your body.

3. Sugar can cause insulin resistance

Insulin, a vital hormone in the body which allows glucose to get into cells from the bloodstream and hormones, communicates with the cells to burn glucose instead of fats. The harmful effect of sugar in this is having too much glucose in the blood which is detrimental because it causes adverse complications in the body such as having diabetes.

4. Sugar can cause cancer

Cancer is characterized by growth which is uncontrolled and cells that have multiplied; it is one of the most noteworthy illnesses that are causing deaths. The hormones produced and induced by insulin are the primary cause of this growth. A recent study done by Journal Nature communications described a relationship between sugar and tumours, and this was through a biologic mechanism in cells in yeast. Cancer cells support their reproduction which is rapids through metabolism rewiring for intake of glucose which is later fermented and helps in lactate production. In normal respiration, healthy cells continue to take glucose then break them into water and carbon dioxide. This fermentation of sugar to lactic acid usually has a production which is less 15 times in energy than the respiration sugars. The cycle in yeast cells shows the aggressiveness of cancer.

I can talk about this as I have had personal experience with cancer. I had a stomach tumour called a GIST which is basically a tumour inside your stomach, in my case was at the top of the stomach next to the esophagus which had its own challenges. However, I had to go for regular CT Scan and still do to this day need to go on a regular basis. Anyway back to the story, on one of my CT Scan’s after I had surgery and had my old tumour cut out, they discovered another similar shaped area which looked like a second tumour. The initial thoughts were that it was post surgery but the only way they could actually tell was to do something called a Petscan. A Petscan is like a CT but is slightly different. They inject you with a sugary based dye with some radiation. You have to sit in a chair for 45 minutes completely still just before the Petscan.

After that you need to into a CT Machine, not sure if it was the same machine, but it looked like a regular CT Scan machine and the hardest part was you couldn’t move for another 45 minutes, it was painful just need to not move at all. Byt the idea was that the dye they injected which was sugar based would be sucked up by cancer cells and the area which they were focusing on, would glow much brighter than any other area in the body hence the bit of radiation in your body.

5. Sugar has unique fat- promoting effects

Different foods that we take cause diverse impacts to the brain and hormones. Fructose received does not have same effects of satiety as glucose.Studies show that Fructose consumers have fewer activities of satiety in the brain centers and are usually hungry. This may lead to high consumption hence promoting unique fats which may in return bring adverse effects to the body

Body fat

6. Sugar is addictive

To many people, sugar can be addictive; sugar causes a release of dopamine; the released dopamine increases the addiction power and makes people susceptibility to addiction. Some of the addictive habits may be an addiction to junk food or sugary products. To many people, the release of dopamine in the head after intake of too much sugar can cause addiction, and later the addiction brings other body metabolism diseases.

7. Sugar can be a cause of obesity

People who have the high intake of sugar are likely to be obese. The release of dopamine in the brain promotes addiction, and this addiction leads to high consumption. When people consume more and more, they usually add too much weight which leads to obesity. To children intake of too much sugar can be risky, because a study was done that showed; children who take a serving of sugar-sweetened foods and drinks are at a 60% risk of getting obese. Almond Milk vs. Soy Milk: Which Is Better for You?

Almond and soy milk are the best alternatives for cow milk out there. The two are unmatched breakfast options for people suffering from diabetes, heart conditions or those that are lactose intolerant. Saying one is better than the other is to put it plainly, uninformed. As they say, you should not judge a fish by its ability to climb trees. Similarly, the answer to the question above is only obtained when and if the two are judged by a role they cannot perform. Each has its own merits and demerits. This article strives to shed light on the issue.

Comparison of Both Almond and Soy Milk

Nutritional confines

As previously stated, almond and soy milk are best suited for vegans who cannot stomach the thought of consuming dairy products. To add on to that, they are both gluten-free making them well suited for persons with celiac diseases. Both, however, have their fair share of
allergens. A sizable amount of people, most notably children, are allergic to soy milk. Ingestion of the milk is known to cause swelling, vomiting, hives or even diarrhea.

Furthermore, persons with peach allergies are advised to refrain from consuming almond milk. Although almond milk and soy milk are similar in their allergic symptoms, sensitivity to almond might cause an additional difficulty in breathing and blockage of the airway.

Nutritional Composition

Though higher in fat content, almond milk usually is less starchy than her counterpart. This, therefore, means than almond milk is a safe bet for those looking to cut down on those extra kilos.

With only 40 calories a cup, the unsweetened form of almond milk is unquestionably a dieter’s favourite. You should, however, note that both of them have the good fat. Fat in both types of milk is rich in omega 3 and six fatty acids which come a long way in reducing blood pressure and cholesterol levels. The fatty acids also put up a good fight against cardiovascular diseases.

Soy milk, on the other hand, is more abundant in protein value. A cup of soy milk contains 7g of proteins while a cup of almond milk only has 4g of it. Both are extraordinary regarding their vitamin B content. High consumption of Vitamin B is associated with quicker loss of weight.

Consequently, both are excellent sources of manganese, zinc, magnesium, phosphorous, copper and iron. Blood pressure and diseases can never win a fight against a body equipped with the above minerals.

One noteworthy plus of almond milk over soy milk is that the later is richer in manganese and Vitamin E making it better equipped in the fight against cancer and dry, flaky skin.

After Effects of Consuming Almond Milk

Almond milk can be hazardous if consumed by persons with thyroid deficiencies. Processed almond milk is known to contain chemicals that obstruct the intake of iodine into the thyroids. This results in the low functionality of the thyroids, high susceptibility to infection and fertile ground for pathogenic germs to breed.

The lack of iodine in a human body often results to goitre, a fact that has led to iodine been duped as a goitrogen. Almond is also a bad idea for small babies and people with nut allergies.

After Effects of Consuming Soy Milk

Medics have linked high consumption of soy milk to an increased likeability of contracting breast cancer. Soy milk brands in the market are known to sell milk with more-than-is- recommended sugar and chemical percentage.

Additionally, the milk has isoflavones which are linked to leukemia and thyroid problems. Other than that, the milk has phytoestrogen which is known to cause infertility in men and delayed puberty and reproductive issues in women. The high estrogen levels in soy milk make it dangerous for babies.

Similarities between Almond Milk and Soy Milk

Both have low calorie and fat levels. Additionally, both types of milk are known to have zero cholesterol, gluten, and Trans fats. We cannot also ignore the fact that both have a staggering amount of fats in them.

We can never say that one is better than the other, they all serve their respective purpose. When used by the right persons, for the right reasons, and in the allowable amounts, both types of milk can never disappoint.

Almond Milk vs Cow Milk vs Soy Milk vs Rice Milk — A Quick Pro & Cons List

Milk Bottles

One man’s meat is another’s poison. Such is the irony of life. Milk, in this case, is no different. Whether a specific type of milk is of help or disadvantage to you depends on the following factors; your dietary needs, whether or not you are on a diet, your taste and health.

Teenagers, expectant women and kids over the age of three subscribe into a group commonly referred to as the persons in critical development stages. They require calcium, proteins and Vitamin D in substantial amounts. Dairy milk is generous in the mentioned. Dairy milk, however, is not a wise choice for anyone looking to cut down on their weight. Medical research proves that milk has the highest cholesterol-calorie content in comparison to other types of milk.

This article details on the four major types of milk; and their pro and cons.

Cow Milk

Cow milk is also popularly referred to as dairy milk. There are four types of dairy milk; whole milk, 1 percent milk, milk free of lactose
and skimmed milk.

Whole milk is milk with all of its fat still intact. Research has shown that a cup of whole dairy milk has 8.5% solids free of fat, 88% water, and 8g of fats. Since the milk is still in its natural form, it still is rich in Vitamin D, proteins, calcium and fats.

The remaining types of, dairy milk either have some or all fat extracted from them. For this reason, whole milk ranks first in the calorie count chart. In one cup, the entire milk calorie count sits at 150 with the 1 percent and skimmed milk count is at 110 and 80 respectively. Lactose-free milk goes through processing to break down the lactose component in it. Like is the norm with all other types of milk, lactose-free milk is rich in minerals, proteins, vitamins, and calcium. The fat-cholesterol percentage in the milk is, however, varying.

Advantages of Cow Milk

  • The milk is, in comparison with the rest, in protein content.
  • The milk is a reliable source of fats, minerals, and vitamins for both the young and the elderly
  • The lactose-free option is available for the lactose intolerant.
  • Easily accessible in convenient and grocery stores.

Cow milk is rich in fats and calories. The above has not been pleasant experiences on some people who want to trim on their weight, or even some facing heart ailments and high cholesterol.

Milk Nutritional Values

Almond Milk

The milk is extracted from grounded almonds. Almond milk is known to be lower in calorie in comparison to all other types of milk. Additionally, the milk is free of lactose, cholesterol and saturated fats. Although almonds are rich in proteins, the same can not be said about almond milk. The milk is rich in calcium through the ones in our market are supplemented and fortified with vitamins.

Almond milk is made by mixing almonds with water and then putting it through a strainer to remove any remaining solids. It has a nutty flavour and soft creamy texture that is similar to cow’s milk. For this reason it is a popular choice for vegetarians and vegan’s alike who are are allergic or intollerant to dairy products.

Most brands of almond milk are enriched with vitamins, minerals or proteins. Controlled studies have linked whole almonds to a variety of healthy benefits, but many of them do not apply to Almond Milk. THis is because almond milk is strained and usually made rom blanched or skinless almonds.

Pros of Almond Milk

  • Low in calorie
  • Rich in Vitamin A and D
  • Is lactose-free
  • Unsweetened Almond Milk doesn’t raise blood sugar
  • It’s Dairy Free
  • It’s nutritious

  1. It isn’t the best source of calcium

Unsweetened Almond Milk

Soy Milk

The milk is extracted from soybeans. The milk is a favourite for the lactose intolerant and the vegans. Because it is obtained from plants, the milk is lactose-free and cholesterol free. Soy milk is rich in potassium, protein, and calcium.

Soy milk has been a substitute for cow’s milk for many decades and has the most balanced nutritional balance of all the 4 kinds of milk. It is also one of the most widely consumed for the health benefits offered by the phytonutrients present in milk also know as isoflavones, these phytonutrients have anti-carcinogenic properties which have helped prevent or delay various types and forms of cancer.

Many people dislike the bean type flavour and people are concerned about the presence of anti-nutrients, substances that may reduce the nutrient intake and digestion in your body.

Too much soy may be a problem for people with thyroid disease. A 2008 Harvard study showed that higher intakes of soy-based foods caused fertility problems and lower sperm counts. Soy is also a common allergen. People who are allergic to soy should not drink soy milk.

No matter what your reason you have for drinking soy milk, it is important to start out slowly as with any change in your diet and monitor any side effects you may have from drinking soy milk. Changes in what we eat and drink can affect our digestive and elimination processes.

Silk soy milk does not provide phosphorus or Vitamin C that milk does. However, it does provide just as much Calcium along with a larger amount of Vitamin D, Vitamin A and iron than milk does.

Pros of Soy Milk

  • Rich in potassium, protein, Vitamin A, D, and B12.
  • The milk almost has the same amount of protein as cow milk though it has a way much lower calorie count
  • Has no cholesterol

Cons of Soy Milk

Soy can be quite problematic to those with thyroids. It is also linked to infertility.

Soy Milk

Rice Milk

The milk is extracted from milled rice and water. The milk is not known to cause any allergies making it the best for people with nut or lactose allergies. Rice milk can generally be fortified with Calcium and Vitamin D, it’s really not a good natural source for either one of these vitamins, just like soy milk or almond milk. Rice milk is popular with vegetarians and vegans because as you probably know, it does not contain any animals products or by-products. Rice milk is also great for people who are lactose intolerant.

Rice Milk contains more carbohydrates than you would find in cow’s milk. Unlike cow’s milk, however, rice milk doesn’t contain lactose or cholesterol. This keeps your heart healthy and safe for those of us who are lactose intolerant.

Most commercial brands of rice milk are fortified with calcium. One cup of rice milk contains about 145 calories compared to 185 calories in a cup of cow’s milk and 98 calories in a cup of skimmed cow’s milk. Rice milk still contains more fat than skimmed cow’s milk.

Rice milk is a tasty alternative for vegans and vegetarians who are allergic to soy. While rice milk doesn’t offer the health benefits of soy, it’s still a healthy drink to consume.

Many people make their own rice milk at home which is easy and inexpensive to make, home-made rice milk doesn’t necessarily have the benefit of being nutritionally fortified.

Advantages of Rice Milk

  • Not known to bring about any allergies
  • Fortification promotes quality.
  • Rice Milk can be used by vegans which is a positive

Cons of Rice Milk

The milk is high in starch and low in proteins making it an unlikely choice for the elderly or the diabetic.

I have what? Shingles

I have what? Shingles

Yes, you heard it right shingles. It is cringe-worthy yes, but you have absolutely nothing to worry about, shingles are controllable, preventable and curable. For those who have no idea what shingles are, this article has got your back.

Shingles are viral infections resulting from a virus known as varicella-zoster the same germ known to bring about chickenpox. After chickenpox, the virus varicella-zoster becomes inactive and relocates to the spinal cord and brain areas only activating years later to bring on shingles. The virus varicella-zoster checks into a category of viruses known as the herpes viruses, viruses’ notorious causing genital herpes and the cold sores.

Shingles are known to leave a burning or itchy sensation on one’s skin. Though they can manifest on any part of your body, shingles are more common to either the right or left torso of the infected. Consequently, the rash might develop on one eye or half the neck or face. The surprising thing is, some go through shingles without developing a single rash on their skins. Though not grave, shingles can cause a lot of pain and discomfort. While vaccines trim down the risk of occurrence of shingles, timely treatment shortens the shingle infection and lessens the probability of reoccurrence.

Symptoms of Shingles

Though they only affect part of your body, the signs are easy to spot. The signs are, but not limited to;

  • A burning, tingly sensation
  • Pain
  • Heightened skin sensitivity
  • The red rash is evident few days after the pains
  • Blisters filled with fluid that eventually burst open and dry out
  • Itching and numbness

Others signs are;

• Fatigue

  • Fever
  • Dizziness
  • A headache

Pain is more often than not, the earliest warning sign of shingles. The pain differs from one person to the next, to some it is unbearable to others it is almost inexistent. Pain located in major body organs such as kidneys, lungs or hearts, is often prone to misdiagnosis.

When to See your Doctor

Like previously stated shingles are in no way life-threatening, but it is advisable to take a trip to your doctor upon seeing the following signs.

  • If the pain or rashes are close to your eyes. If ignored, the following can permanently damage your eyes.
  • If you are 60 and above. The risk of complication increases with age. Older people are at a higher risk of developing a complication.
  • If you have a weak immune system. A weakened immune system results from cancer, chronic illnesses or medication.
  • If the rashes are excruciating or widespread.

Though the causes of shingles are known, the reasons as to why the infection occurs remain unknown. However, rumour has it that the infection might result from the lowered immunity in persons of advanced age. Shingles are common to the old and those with weakened immunity levels.

Are Shingles Contagious?

Yes, shingles are contagious. The virus varicella-zoster can quickly be passed on to any person with zero immunity against chickenpox. The virus, however, can only be passed when one comes into contact with the open shingle sores. The person, however, develops chickenpox instead of shingles.

Till your shingle scabs heal, you should avoid contact with anyone who is yet to develop the illness, pregnant women, and infants.

What are some of the Shingles Risk Factors?

Any person who has had run-ins with chickenpox is at a higher risk of getting infected with shingles. Other aspects that promote the hazard of getting infected are;

  • Being past 50
  • Suffering from diseases that might otherwise weaken your immunity
  • Those undergoing chemotherapy. Chemotherapy lowers one’s resistance to illness.
  • Those under medication.

Complications that Result from Shingles

  • Skin infections if and when the blisters that result from shingles are not carefully treated
  • Vision loss if the disease occurs around a person’s eyes
  • Neurological complications if major sensory nerves are affected.

Shingles are preventable. One can prevent them in the following ways.

Getting a chickenpox vaccine

Although the varivax vaccine is principally administered to young kids as a preventive measure for chicken pox, adults who are yet to suffer from chickenpox are advised to take the vaccine. The vaccine also reduces the rate of shingle infection.

Shingle vaccines

Shingle vaccines are the most guaranteed way of doing away with the infection

As previously stated, shingles are 100% preventable and controllable. Take the shingle vaccine as early as possible, like they say prevention is always the safest option. To those that are already infected, there is no need to panic. Visit your doctor as early as possible for proper diagnosis.

Is Soy Bad For You, or Good? The Shocking Truth

Soy Milk

Is Soy Bad for You, or Good? The Shocking Truth

A caring friend has probably kept you up to speed with the detrimental health effects soy consumption can have on you. The last few decades have seen soy gain herself’ quite an audience, nay-sayers, and yea-sayers alike. The question on every consumer’s and nutritionist’s mind is “is soy bad for you or good”? The question has been thrown back and forth for some time now with no clear answers to show for it.

This article attempts to separate facts from rumours. We delve deeper into the soy issue’ giving you a detailed account of its dietary value and side effects, but first things first let’s try to understand what soy is.

Soy and its Use

Soy’s origin can easily be traced back to the East of Asia with countries such as the United States only recently adopting the legume. Soy is a common household delicacy with most of its consumers opting to use it in tofu, dairy, soy milk and to some it is the perfect meat substitute. Additionally, the legume is a splendid addition to fermented foods like tempeh, miso, and nato.

It is, however, important that consumers cook soy before consumption since it is highly poisonous in its raw form.

Benefits of consuming Soy

Soy is extracted from the soybean plant which is ascribed to the legume family. Like is the norm to most legumes, beans, peas and green grams, soybeans are high in protein value.

Dietary Value of Soy

Nutritionists estimate the protein content in a three-quarter cup of cooked soybeans to be at 75 grams which is similar to the protein content in a half cup of cooked fish or meat. Consequently, soy is higher in fat in comparison to other legumes which contain almost zero to none fat content. The later should not come as a downer to those checking on their calorie intake; this is because of the fat present in soy checks into the good fat’ books.

Soy Milk

Other than that, soy is an excellent source mineral such as iron and calcium. Calcium is highly recommended for its ability to build and maintain strong and healthy bones and teeth while iron typically ferries oxygen to muscle cells and tissues. Also, soy is abundant in the
antioxidants isoflavones.

Health Benefits of Soy

Heightened Body Metabolism Rate

Like previously mentioned, soy is one of the most reliable sources of protein. Proteins are known to ameliorate the body’s metabolism while at the same time boosting the overall body functionality.

Typically, proteins are referred to as the building blocks of blood vessels and cells which are some of the essential components of a human being. The proteins obtained from soybeans ensure quick regrowth of broken down cells that otherwise need to be replaced or repaired.

Healthy Way to Gaining and Losing Weight

Soy works wonders regarding curbing that excess appetite which, over time, reduces overeating which is linked to obesity and many other lifestyle diseases. Consequently, soybeans are rich in fibre which, if eaten in large quantities, can help one gain weight. With soy, you can have the best of both worlds.

Lowering the Risk of Cancer

We had previously disclosed that soy is abundant in the antioxidants isoflavones. Antioxidants, in this case, isoflavones, work wonders when it comes to fighting off cancer. Antioxidants neutralize free radicals which are dangerous after results of cellular metabolism. The free radicals, is not eradicated early enough, can cause normal cells to transmute into hazardous cancerous cells. The high fibre content in soy is also known to put colon cancer on the low.

Soy Milk

Disadvantages of Consuming Soy

Exposure to Carcinogens

94% of the soy produced in the USA is genetically engineered. Genetically engineered plants are specially designed to withstand the effects of herbicides. In the process of planting, the genetically engineered soybeans absorb a hefty amount of glycophytes which, with time, accumulates in one’s body. Glycophytes is known to cause miscarriages and abnormal fetal development.

Other adverse side effects of soy include;

  1. Throat itchiness
  2. Accumulation of gas in one’s stomach

Like everything else, soy has its pros and cons. Our extract has given you a clear picture of what each side of the coin looks like. We leave it for you to decide; is soy bad or good for you?
