Juicing is the process of extracting juice from fruit and vegetables or simply the process of crushing some type of food to get juice out of it. CENTRIFUGAL FORCE JUICERS
On centrifugal juicers the blade and basket spins at a very rapid speed of around 3,000 – 7000 RPMs (Rev’s per minute) to separate the juice from the pulp. This type of juicer cuts up the fruit and vegetables with a flat cutting blade. The blade has raised sharp little triangular protrusions on the blade which cause the fruit and vegetables to be ripped into little pieces. The sheer power of the centrifugal force causes the juice to be extracted. This is a similar way a washing machine spins to remove water from wet washing.
The models that don’t come with a pulp ejector has a strainer basket which you will need to empty, around every 2 glasses of fruit juice that the juicer creates. The pulp in the basket may lower the effectiveness of your juicing. The more expensive models come with a ‘pulp ejector’, something you may want to look out for, this feature will automatically eject the pulp when it is full which is a useful feature to have so you don’t have to worry about it.
Centrifugal Juicer Advantages
The advantage of a centrifugal juicer is that it has a large chute that reduces the need for pre-cutting the fruits which allows you to create a nutritious juice in just a few seconds.These types of juicers allow for rapid high speed juicing of fruits and vegetables or other food items. Pulp which is removed can be used as garden compost or discarded or possibly other recipes allowing you to recycle and reuse the fibre instead of it going to waste.
Advantages of a Centrifugal Juicer
- A centrifugal juicer can be much cheaper to purchase than a gear juicer and may be good for a beginner, or if you just want to “juice for fun”. However, some units cost hundreds of dollars, so keep that in mind when comparing with the “typically” more expensive, but much better, gear juicers.
- They are commonly available in most department stores.
- They are generally easy to clean after use.
- They do reduce the amount of pesticides in the juice from the fruits and vegetables you juice, but not as much as a gear juicer.
Disadvantages of A Centrifugal Juicer
- A centrifugal juicer is noisy as the motor spins at a very high-speed – except for the Acme Centrifugal Juicers and those built just like them.
- The high-speed spinning causes oxidation that destroys enzymes and nutrients.
- The high-speed blade shredder does not penetrate the produce deeply enough to extract precious nutrients of the juices.
You probably know by now, that fresh juice is good for you. But if you are like most Americans and others in the world you are more than likely using a centrifugal juicer to extract your juice.
Here’s the truth: you are not getting the nutritional benefits you could be if you juiced those same fruits and vegetables with a gear juicer. However, you are getting at least 80% of the nutritional healing benefits of the juice extracted by a gear or masticating type juicer. So that’s not bad…and it’s certainly better than any pasteurized juice you can buy in the store.
How does a masticating juicer work?
A masticating juicer works with a single gear or auger. An auger is a drilling device, or drill bit, that usually includes a rotating helical screw blade called a “flighting” to act as a screw conveyor to remove the drilled out material, or in this case, pulp. The remaining juice is collected and strained through wire mesh and collected. As the auger turns, the inserted fruits and produce is crushed, squeezed against the outside wall of the juicer. The filter, screen or wire mesh which lines the side of the wall holds the pulp while the remaining juices are forced out. Since this process is done slowly, the juice extract is not heated up. Nutrients and enzymes at this lower temperature are able to survive and kept intact within the juice.
What are the benefits of a masticating juicer?
There are multiple benefits of using a masticating juicer such as the auger turns and crushes your fruits and vegetables, the slow but efficient process is able to yield more juice from the produce inserted. This benefit of using a masticating juicer will be evident in the drier pulp. It can be noted that on average, a masticating juicer will produce about 15% to 20% more juice. With the rise in the cost of fruits and vegetables, this may be a more economical solution in the long run. Another benefit of using a masticating juicer is that the nutrients, enzymes and trace minerals are not exposed to the heat of a faster juice extraction process. This slower process means less heat and less foam in your juice. By crushing and “chewing” the produce inserted into the juicer, the masticating juicer keeps all of the healthy benefits of your produce intact. Masticating juicers are also extremely efficient at juicing fruits, vegetables, including leafy greens, grasses and leaves. Produce like spinach, wheatgrass, celery, parsley, lettuce and other leafy greens and herbs are able to juiced using a masticating juicer. The final benefit of masticating juicers is that due to the slower rate of rotation of the single auger, the juicer will last longer.
Triturating Juicers, their benefits and weaknesses
Triturating juicers are more commonly known by the name “Twin Gear Juicers” or “Double Auger Juicers”. “Triturate” means to crush or grind into a very fine powder and that is exactlty what these juicers do. Using two augers this juicer type does the best job at juicing for very high yield because it leave the pulp of the juice fully extracted of juice.
The benefits of triturating juicers are:
- They produce very high quality juice full of nutrients
- They create little to no oxidation of the juice due to low speeds
- They juice vegetables and leafy greens extraordinarily well
The weaknesses are:
- They can take a long time to clean up.
- Juicing can take up a long time when compared to a faster spinning juicer
- The cost is higher than most other juicers
Drinking your veggies is convenient and good for you. The lycopene in tomato juice may help lower the risk of prostate cancer. Beet juice may help curb blood pressure. Pulpy vegetable juice has some fiber (but not as much as raw vegetables); and fiber cuts hunger. You also get far less sugar and fewer calories than in the typical fruit juice. Check the sodium, though, or choose a low-salt version.

The problem with fruit juice…
Lack of fibre is the key problem. Juicing releases the sugars in fruit and removes the insoluble fibre; blending also releases the sugars and tears apart theinsoluble fibre. If you’re just starting out with juicing, the first thing you’ll need is…well…a juicer! There are two main kinds of juicers out there—centrifugal (AKA: fast) and masticating (AKA: slow or cold-press) juicers.
The typical juicer you grab from the big box store is probably a centrifugal juicer. The disadvantages of these kind of juicers are pretty numerous—they aren’t very efficient at extracting juice, they don’t do well juicing leafy greens, they are loud as all get out, and some of these juicers get hot enough that they actually break down of the nutrients in the juice.
The advantage of these kind of juicers? They are very affordable—you can grab one for about $40. If you only want to juice occasionally and not for nutrition purposes (like say for cooking or baking), a centrifugal juicer will do you fine.
One important note: If you consume grapefruit juice, keep in mind that it can negatively interact with some medications, such as statin drugs. If you have any concerns, check with your doctor to see whether you can safely consume the juice.
Bottom line? If you enjoy juice, go for the real thing, and limit yourself to one 8-ounce glass per day — or 4 ounces if you’re limiting calories or sugars.

There is a whole discussion around the negatives of 100% percent juice, take note this is the juice you can buy from the store and in a lot of cases is concentrate. Nutritionist Dr Jonny Bowen suggests removing this type of fruit juice from your diet entirely. Juicing itself is a healthy way to consume the right type of juice. The 100% Juice is mostly just pure sugar which is not what you want and has no real nutrition value. According to Medline Plus, consuming juice before a meal can actually make you more hungry because it adds calories and could cause you to eat more than if you had not had it. A cup of apple juice only has 0.2 gram of fibre, a cup of fresh raw orange has only 4.3 grams of fibre. A whole apple contains 3.3 grams of fibre.
A few other tips for juicing
If you do decide to take the plunge, here are a few suggestions we’ve found make the best juicing experience:
- Focus on vegetables, but include some fruit. We’ve found that one small apple makes a huge difference in flavor. This is all we recommend so far in the fruit department.
- Include 1-2 root vegetables–such as carrots or beets–to add additional flavor and antioxidants. We like to include either 2 small carrots (1 large) or 2 small beets (1 large). These tend to contribute a tad more sugar and a nice earthy flavor, adding complexity.
- Add at least one leafy green vegetable. We’ve been happy with kale, broccoli and chard (currently in season), but others likely work as well.
- Include one watery vegetable. Cucumber, celery and other watery vegetables help dilute the too-strong flavors of the previous 3 ingredients. This can make a big difference in drinkability, while adding some nice flavor and additional vitamins.
- Don’t forget a garnish. A small amount of a strong flavored item such as ginger, lemon, mint or other herb can make your juice a real pleasure to drink while adding highly concentrated antioxidants.
- Consider adding back a few scoops of the fiber that is filtered out by the juicer. This will make your juice more filling.
You can’t go wrong with any of these Juicers even the low budget one, all of these are good choices and you won’t regret buying any of them. I would recommend you focus more on veggies than fruits, but as long as you not taking too much of one thing, you will be fine.
