Craving for something, but not sure if it’s okay for your cough?
Worry no more, as we present here some of the foods that you can safely and comfortably dine on when hit by that annoying cough.
Hippocrates, the Father of Western Medicine, said, “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.”Very aptly said, as there have been numerous studies supporting the idea that eating certain kinds of food can help a person get better.
When you come down with a cough, you are likely to feel uncomfortable while eating. You sometimes lose your appetite for the usual fare that you prefer, simply because the urge to cough is persistent. Along with this, you may also feel exhausted from losing sleep because of the continual coughing. To make things worse, some cough sufferers experience a sore throat as well, which makes swallowing harder.
However, having a cough does not mean you cannot eat. On the contrary, you should take very good care of your health so you can feel better soon. The key is to choose the right food or drink.
Here is a list of food and beverages that can help you when you are down with a cough:
There are certain fruits that are good for helping you with your cough.
For one, avocados are packed with fibre, vitamins and minerals. They also have high levels of monounsaturated fats, the kind of healthy fat found in olive oil. In addition, the oleic acid in avocados plays a role in immune function as well as help decrease inflammation. On a more practical sense, avocados are soft and easy to eat. They are also relatively bland so you need not to worry about strong flavours that may exacerbate your cough.
Apples are a good go-to snack when you have a cough. They are rich in flavonoids which have anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anti-viral properties that can boost immune function and reduce the incidence of coughs.
Cranberries have flavonoids called proanthocyanidins. Power-packed with polyphenols, these richly coloured berries can significantly lower the risk of catching colds as well as support your immune system.
Pineapples are also good for your cough as they contain bromelain. Bromelain is an enzyme that helps reduce inflammation and is said to be good in calming coughs and soothing a sore throat. Of course, pineapples are also a good source of Vitamin C!
Eat leafy, green vegetables like kale, romaine lettuce, and spinach when you have a cough. Aside from being packed with fibre, minerals and vitamins, these leafy green also have antibacterial properties. They are good sources of Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin K, and folate as well.
Look for dark green vegetables, too, as these contain beneficial plant compounds and antioxidants that protect cellular damage and fight inflammation.
You might also want to eat sweet potatoes. These sweet-tasting root vegetables are rich in Vitamin A that helps keep the mucosal membranes healthy.
Broths and soups are excellent helpers when it comes to hydration. Especially if made from scratch and packed with vegetables, broths and soups are flavorful and filling options when you have a cough.
Chicken soup is probably the most popular go-to soup when people are sick. This is because it is easy to eat and is a good source of vitamins and minerals that your body needs. Chicken contains N-acetyl-cysteine, an amino acid that helps loosen thick mucus. This protein also prevents neutrophil action or white blood cells that cause symptoms such as stuffy nose and coughing.
Hot broths also help as a natural decongestant as you inhale the hot steam while eating.
There are different kinds of teas that can help relieve your cough.
Garlic tea, mixed with a teaspoon of honey, is a good drink with antibacterial and antimicrobial properties.
Honey and pepper tea is also a good mix, especially when you have a wet cough. It helps reduce the production of mucus. Manuka honey, especially, has high levels of antibacterial elements. You can even have a teaspoon of it on its own and enjoy its antiseptic qualities while it coats and soothes your throat.
To help open up your airways and break down mucus, try drinking peppermint tea. For better results, you can also add honey and lemon.
Last but definitely not the least, keep a glass of water near you at all times. Take frequent sips to reduce the irritation in your throat or gulp it down to hydrate yourself.
You can also gargle salt water for about 30 seconds to help reduce the inflammation in your throat. Salt has antiseptic qualities that will aid in relieving your cough. Do not drink the salt water, though, as it will dehydrate you. Spit after gargling and repeat multiple times a day, as needed.
These food and beverages are meant to help support your body when it is attacked by an irritating cough. You can also get relief by taking chest cough treatments that can provide cough relief by loosening the mucus, clearing it out from the airways, and preventing excess mucus from forming.
When coughing becomes worse and continues for over three weeks, it is best to go see your doctor.
There are many factors that have been linked to an increased risk of cancer over the years, including lack of physical activity, consuming too much sugar and processed foods, smoking, being overweight, drinking too much alcohol, and so on. As you can see, all of these can be prevented if the right action is taken.
Research published by UK scientists in September 2018 talks about the two leading preventable causes of cancer – smoking and obesity – and shows that obesity is likely to overtake smoking in the years to come. This isn’t to say you or anyone else should turn your entire lifestyle upside down, give up BBW dating, chocolate, a slice of pizza or a can of Coke, but caution is definitely warranted as evidenced by the figures below.
Recent research suggests that obesity is set to overtake smoking as the biggest preventable cause of cancer in women in about 25 years. At the moment, 12 percent of cancers in women are linked to smoking in the UK, and 7 percent are linked to obesity or being overweight. The current trends suggest that the number of smokers is falling, while the number of women who have excess weight is rising.
If these trends continue, smoking and obesity could be equal culprits by 2035, and obesity is expected to take the no.1 spot when it comes to preventable causes of cancer in women by 2043.
When it comes to men, given that there are more male than female smokers, obesity is set to become the leading preventable cause of cancer in men at a later time. It should be noted that obesity is more prevalent in men as well, but it poses a greater health danger to women. Types of cancer linked to smoking include acute myeloid leukemia, lung, bladder, bowel, cervical, pancreatic, and stomach cancer.
Cancers associated with being overweight or obese include bowel, gallbladder, kidney, liver, breast, ovarian, and thyroid cancer.
Researchers believe that the same strategy that was employed to reduce the number of smokers should be used again to educate the public on the danger of carrying excess weight in order to reduce the number of people who qualify as overweight or obese. Children who are overweight are five times more likely to be overweight or obese as adults, and levels of childhood obesity are on the rise across the globe.
With this in mind, a good place to start the anti-obesity campaign similar to the anti-smoking campaign we’ve seen everywhere over the past several decades or so is definitely a family or the parents of young children who are at risk or are already packing more than a few extra pounds.
Measures to reduce obesity certainly includes raising awareness about the link between cancer and being overweight given that surveys suggest that only one in seven women realizes there is a link, as well as special measures that protect children. Those measures include a ban on junk food commercials on TV before 9 pm and a ban or restrictions on promotions and price reductions of unhealthy food aimed at children.
Granted, it took decades of severe campaigning to reduce the number of smokers, as well as a political action such as higher taxes on tobacco products, a ban or restriction of marketing tobacco products, and a ban on smoking indoors or in some cases even in public places. Needless to say, this battle is not over, but it’s a good example of what could be done to fight obesity.
Experts agree that obesity is definitely the health challenge of this generation and it requires bold action sooner rather than later. They call obesity ‘the new smoking’, and remind the public that it doesn’t just increase the risk of various types of cancer, but also put people at a higher risk of developing cardiovascular problems and type two diabetes.
Notwithstanding the fact that not everyone who smokes or is overweight will develop cancer, people put themselves in harm’s way when they could take action and prevent many health problems by choosing a different lifestyle. There are factors that are linked to cancer we can’t affect, such as age and genes, but those that can be tackled should be tackled head-on, not just on the individual level, but for the population as a whole as well.
Please go ahead and leave me feedback
I would love to hear from you and if I have missed anything, let me know and I will add it.
I would appreciate you linking back to our blog http://healthyfixation if you found any of these articles useful and please let us know where we could improve or add additional content on a specific subject.
With age comes wisdom, financial security, and declining health. But that last one doesn’t have to be that way. If we don’t stay on top of our health it starts naturally declining in our 20s, and I don’t know about you, but I plan to live to live for almost another century after that, but that’s a lot of years for our health to deteriorate.
Harsh words . . . maybe, but if it saves us from heart disease, cancer, obesity, diabetes, and god knows that list goes on, then so be it. Here are 5 ways to get on top of your health.
OK, not to start the article off by scaring you but this first one won’t be easy to hear. After you hit 25 your metabolism starts to decrease — this is natural as you’re not building bone anymore so it can’t be avoided. It’s not that it decreases that’s scary, but by how much.
You can expect your metabolism to decrease at a rate of 1-2% each year after you hit the ripe ol’ age of 25. To put that into perspective, if you can eat 2000 calories max at 25 without putting on any fat, by age 50 you might be only able to consume 1500 at most. Yikes!
This is why diet, and more importantly exercising, are critical if we want to stay at a healthy weight as we age.
Stress kills! You know that stress is hard on the body, but do you know how? Stress releases the chemicals adrenaline and noradrenaline, and this raises your heart rate and prevents adequate blood flow to both the brain and the musculoskeletal system. As well, glucose levels rise to provide the body with extra energy to combat the threat.
Often we forget about our needs and get caught up taking care of our loved ones, but finding the time where you can be by yourself is so important. And that can look like whatever you want it to be. Be it a TV show, meditation, or listening to music. Just make some time for yourself.
I know it’s difficult and that you’ve heard it a thousand times before, but here it is again.
Smoking and tobacco use are the leading cause of emphysema and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, as well, using tobacco can increase the risk of heart disease and lung, mouth, and throat cancer.
Men should drink no more than 2 drinks a day, while women should stay at just one a day.
A multivitamin may be useful if you’re commonly restricting your calories, but if you are at a healthy weight or not on a diet, a multivitamin may be a bit redundant. Instead, check out vitamin D if you’re not getting a lot of sunlight as it can dramatically improve your mood.
As well, look into fish or hemp oil as both are rich in omega 3 and 6 fatty acids which can reduce inflammation and help give you healthier skin.
Pets play a large part in human health, there are studies which show us that being around pets and animals helps us relax, destress and keep a healthy mindset. Pets keep people happy especially pet lovers who can’t live without pets. I for one will always have animals around me. I grew up with pets, I love dogs, cats and even built a large pond in my yard which houses Gold Fish and Koi. Here is a site which I documented the build process.
That being said just as it is important to keep humans healthy, you also need to take care of your furry friends who keep you happy and healthy.
CBD oil is all the rage in 2018 because it’s been helping a lot of people and their animals with the tips from above. Natural CBD oil has been shown in studies to lower weight and balance the hormones that cause hunger and satiety in our pets. As well, many are finding it’s been a big help when it comes to anxiety and stress — some use it for everyday work-induced stress while others for their PTSD.
If that wasn’t enough, this study looked at using CBD inhalers as a replacement whenever a tobacco user wanted a cigarette and found that it significantly lowered their use. Last, like essential oils, CBD oil needs a carrier oil to improve it’s shelf life and bioavailability, and it’s common to see CBD oil with coconut oil or hemp oil. Coconut is so 2017 because oil has a much denser nutrient profile.
Anal fissures in the human digestion system have traditionally been known to be caused by bowel movements during defecation. Whereas many people have different ways of describing and defining what anal fissures are, both patients and medical practitioners mutually agree that an anal fissure is a slight tear or an open sore in the internal walls of the anus.
Chronic anal fissures are known to cause burning or stinging sensations leading to extreme discomfort and bloody fecal material. Besides constipation, there is a myriad of reasons that trigger this condition. Persistent diarrhea also has been noted to cause a painful burning sensation; this coupled up with a
victim’s tight anal sphincter muscles cause considerable abrasion to the anal walls hence causing an anal fissure. Inflammatory bowel diseases such as ulcerative colitis, STIs and Crohn’s disease are some of the conditions that spill over and bring instances of regular and chronic anal fissures.
The benefits of aloe vera have been out for everyone to see, though not many people understand the benefits of this wonder plant. The plant is a tried and tested a remedy for treating skin related ailments, and at treating anal abrasions or anal fissures, the plant’s creamy gel is a sure way. For quicker results, the use of fresh aloe vera is best due to the fact that most of the products at your local supermarket contain very little amounts of aloe vera, it is best to use the unprocessed creamy gel from the plant for the best results. It is advisable to use the product twice a day for a few days until the fissures are gone through this home remedy.
Coconut oil is an exceptional home remedy for treating mild and chronic anal fissures, due to the presence of triglycerides a medium oil lipid that also has glycerol and three fatty acids. Coconut oil provides the digestive system with the needed lubrication and healing of the anal fissures. Besides eating coconuts to alleviate yourself from pain, use of coconut oil in cooking is also good for the abrasions in your anal walls and your general health too. Coconut oil can also be directly applied on to the affected areas using your hands for up to 3 times a day until you are relieved from the sensational burning in your anus.
Apple cider vinegar contains heteropolysaccharide or pectin which is essential in promoting bowel movements and digestion. A mixture of water and two teaspoons of apple cider vinegar provides relief from the intense burning due to anal fissures. Pectin enhances the production of colon and rectum secretions that cover their walls hence promoting healing. Honey may be added to the solution for those with a sweet tooth.
The consumption of wheat germ oil is beneficial due to the high presence of octacosanol. Octacosanol is a waxy product obtained from
this oil when consumed the oil provides insulation and lubrication to the digestive system. The product is associated with useful cholesterol in the body; the oil is also a rich source of omega six acids. Wheat germ oil is a good anti-inflammatory agent which promotes
the healing of chronic anal fissures without corrosion. The oil may be directly applied on to the affected areas for at least twice a day. It is important to note that after application, the oil should be wiped off after two hours to give room for healing.
Linum Usitatissimum or flaxseed as commonly known is an awesome superfood to humankind being one of the best plant sources of omega three fatty acids. The high presence of laxative properties in flaxseed, hardened stool in the colon mushes up into pulp hence improving defecation hence protecting against possible instances of anal fissures; and for those already suffering, flaxseed rejuvenates the internal walls of the anus thus relieving you from the persistent throbbing pain. Flaxseed may be taken orally in a mixture with water; it is
recommended that you take it in the evening before bed. Also, there are herbal flaxseed tablets that may be bought over the counter at your local drug dispensing outlet.
Due to our day to day lifestyles, our eating habits make us prone to constipation. Consumption of highly processed foods and sugars
further complicates bowel movement, to this effect, possible instances of anal fissure arise. The Pineapple has been described as a juicy fruit whose benefits in healing chronic anal fissures is noteworthy, the fruit provides the much-needed fibre in the body to promote and ease digestion.
The recommended daily intake of water for an adult is eight glasses or two litres. To this effect, the body remains well hydrated and the excess in passed out in urine and fecal waste. Water is a natural lubricant in the body which promotes the production of body mucus which is a slippery aqueous substance to encourage bowel movement in the digestive tract. The hardened stool is softened through the consistent intake of water thus promoting the treatment of anal fissures
Exercise also plays a significant role in promoting bowel movement; extreme caution should be taken on the types of exercise you choose. A little bit of running or jogging would be good for a bowel movement and increasing blood movement in the body and more so in the affected areas. Avoid biking as it would worsen the condition due to the pressure applied to the anus by the bike saddle or the bike seat. To add salt to injury would be riding the bike on uneven terrain, this would severely cause the anal fissures more damage and more pain ultimately.
Above all, maintain cleanliness in your daily endeavours, practice hygiene by use of good wipes, tissue paper or even toilet napkins. The wipes should not contain alcohol or any other corrosive substances as it would provide good grounds for germs breeding. Water-based wipes are best to use for patients with anal fissures. You should avoid soap in your anus at all cost. Soap irritates the mucosal lining of the anus wiping away valuable mucous; in addition, soap severely irritates the anal sphincter hence is not desirable to use in cleaning up.
